IAM RoadSmart – Masters Examiners

We are all familiar with what Local and National Observers are, what they do and their purpose within IAM RoadSmart – if you are uncertain ask one of them at Tatsfield or Banstead and they will happily explain. Since 2013 both Local and National Observers hold the IMI qualification due to the IAM wanting to be seen as a more professional organisation.

IAM Masters

In January 2017, IAM RoadSmart created 8 new roles, 6 Area Service Delivery Managers (ASDM) who report to 2 Regional Service Delivery Managers (RSDM) with a requirement that anyone taking on these roles had been an advanced police driver or rider. Since

January 2017 only ASDMs or RSDMs can carry out the Masters car and motorcycle test and to ensure standardisation in marking, they have received training from Richard Gladman, IAM RoadSmart Head of Standards into the requirements for each section of the Masters. You may be aware that the Masters marking system has now been adapted to mirror the marking system for our advanced test, although obviously with the Masters it is at a higher standard.

Our IAM RoadSmart advanced test examiners are serving or retired police officers and we also have a number of non-police examiners who have passed the Masters test and are National Observers. Prior to taking on the role, all our examiners are quality assured for the role by ASDMs or RSDMs to ensure that they are driving or riding at the correct level and they have a good working knowledge of our syllabus. We also observe a test that they carry out to ensure that they are testing at the correct level. This quality assurance system is being adapted to mirror some of the requirements for a National Observer and is this is rolling out shortly. Examiners receive a regular newsletter with updates and IAM RoadSmart changes and in addition, this year (2018) we have started holding examiner meetings to ensure that standards are level across the country.

This quality assurance of our examiners removes any variations in what they are testing for.
