The Missenden Flyer

Area of interest:

The Missenden Flyer or TMF as he’s branded himself is a prolific producer of YouTube videos. He concentrates on bike reviews, both initial impressions and longer term assessments of bikes he owns or has use of but also offers advice for new motorcyclists, reviews of kit, fitting accessories etc. He has an absolutely massive garage which is kept extremely tidy!

Strong points:

Excellent technical quality of videos. He looks at a good range of bikes of all types and in his longer term reviews deals with some helpful practical issues e.g. what’s a bike like to keep clean, how easy to wheel around etc. Very much the ‘ordinary bloke, and does not claim to be a particular expert.

Any particular vids worth watching?

I would look at his review of any bike I was considering buying.

Weaknesses:

Tends to be quite positive about the bikes and other products he reviews. Opinions can be a little bland and obvious e.g. the Indian Challenger is smooth and comfortable but also very big; the Triumph Street Triple is light and easy to control; new riders are advised not to go too fast etc. I was disappointed when he bottled out of taking the Tiger Explorer off-road; also when he didn’t disclose the feedback he received from attending a ‘Bikesafe’ day.

How commercial?

TMF has built himself into a brand and has a number of commercial tie-ins, which are displayed on his website: Bennetts insurance and some tour companies. He obviously has to give a mention to the dealers who loan him some of the test bikes, but there’s nothing in the videos which are too intrusively commercial. He also has a range of TMF branded clothing though I’m not sure how much of this gets sold.

Entertainment value:

Personally I wouldn’t watch him for entertainment value alone, only if he was dealing with a bike or product that interested me.
